In an interview with Pharmacy Times, Bled Tanoe, PharmD, discussed how she started the #PizzaIsNotWorking campaign to raise awareness about pharmacy working conditions and burnout. Tanoe said the campaign's name originated because free pizza or other mundane incentives do not adequately address the unrealistic expectations in pharmacies, which lead to an emphasis on metrics rather than patient safety.
Tanoe said that the emphasis on metrics led her to leave retail pharmacy earlier this year, since she no longer felt like she could guarantee the safety of her patients when she was pressured to work faster and faster. She added that these concerns are not exclusive to pharmacists, and burnout also affects pharmacy technicians and other team members.
