Quality Measures Within Medicare Part D for Drug Adherence

Sam Stolpe, PharmD, associate director of quality strategies at the Pharmacy Quality Alliance, describes several quality measures that revolve around safe and appropriate medication use, making them relevant for pharmacists.

For example, Dr. Stolpe explains, Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C) and Prescription Drug Plans (Part D) have 3 measures of medication adherence, including a metric on the appropriate treatment of hypertension in patients with diabetes.

“There’s a trend towards harmonization across measure sets, which is a really good thing, especially for pharmacy,” Dr. Stolpe notes.
