Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder in which people interpret reality abnormally.

Insight:

  • Disease: Schizophrenia may result in some combination of hallucinations, delusions, and extremely disordered thinking and behavior that impairs daily functioning and can be disabling.
  • Symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech and thinking, abnormal motor behavior, and negative symptoms.
  • Risk factors include family history of schizophrenia, exposure to toxins before birth (through mom), taking psychoactive, and psychotropic drugs.
  • Treatment includes second-generation antipsychotics including: Abilify, Saphris, Rexulti, Vraylar, Clozaril, Fanapt, Latuda, Zyprexa, Invega, Seroquel, Risperdal, and Geodon. Also, first-generation antipsychotics, such as chlorpromazine, fluphenazine, haloperidol, and perphenazine. The provider can also prescribe long-acting injectable antipsychotics such as Abilify Maintena, Aristada, Fluphenazine decanoate, Haloperidol decanoate, Invega Sustenna, Invega Trinza, Risperdal Consta and Perseris.
