Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis is the most severe form of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Clinical Pearl of the Day: Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)

NASH is defined as the liver manifestation of a metabolic disorder and is the most severe form of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

Explanation:

  • NAFLD is a condition in which fat builds up in the liver.
  • Nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) and NASH are types of NAFLD.
  • Patients with NASH, develop inflammation and liver damage, along with fat in the liver.
  • Physicians use patients’ medical history, a physical exam, and tests to diagnose NAFLD.
  • They can also use blood tests, imaging tests, and liver biopsy to diagnose NAFLD and tell the difference between NAFL or NASH.
