Clinical Pearl of the Day: Glomerulonephritis

Glomerulonephritis is inflammation of the tiny filters in the kidneys (glomeruli).

Insight:

  • Glomeruli remove excess fluid, electrolytes, and waste from the bloodstream and pass them into the urine.
  • Glomerulonephritis can be acute or gradual (chronic).
  • Glomerulonephritis occurs on its own or as part of another disease, such as lupus or diabetes.
  • Severe or prolonged inflammation associated with glomerulonephritis can damage the kidneys.
  • Treatment depends on the type of glomerulonephritis.
  • Symptoms include pink urine, foamy urine, high blood pressure, and fluid retention.
  • Diagnosis includes urine test, blood test, and imaging studies.
  • Treatment depends on the patient’s symptoms, whether it’s acute or chronic, and whether there is an infection present.
