Pharmacist Stands Ground During Attempted Break-In

Spurred by adrenaline, an Irish pharmacist protected his pharmacy from an attempted break-in.

Spurred by adrenaline, an Irish pharmacist protected his pharmacy from an attempted break-in, according to The Irish Examiner.

Two armed, masked men arrived at Matt Fitzmaurice’s pharmacy in County Kerry, Ireland, and tried to gain entrance by destroying the front window with baseball bats. Five minutes later, however, they left empty-handed.

Fitzmaurice had been doing his books around 11 p.m. on January 4, 2015, when he saw 2 men wearing balaclavas at his window. The pharmacist confronted the men by talking through the glass and locked door.

“There was an awful lot of shouting and roaring while they were there,” Fitzmaurice told The Irish Examiner. “I kept telling them they were not going to get in and was fully determined to protect my pharmacy.”

Fitzmaurice resisted the men and was hurt on his elbow as a result of the incident.

He said he believes the attempted robbers were after pills, not money, because there was no cash at the pharmacy at the time.

“I think it was adrenaline that made me just stand firm and removed any fear I might have of them,” Fitzmaurice told The Irish Examiner.

Police have not yet caught the 2 men involved in the aggravated burglary.
