Dennis Killian, PharmD, PhD: Someone may ask ‘what are some motivating factors for leveraging IV automation in the pharmacy?’ First and foremost, we wanted to decrease our reliance on 503B pharmacies and outsource compounds. So we wanted to be able to prepare those products without our own pharmacy, or insourcing. When you do that, you have 2 options. One is through manual preparation efforts, and the other is through leveraging automation, such as IV robotics. We chose to leverage IV robotics because we felt like it was safer overall. And when you actually do a return on investment analysis, it just makes sense from a financial standpoint.
