OTC/Lifestyle Pearl of the Day: Midol Complete

Indication: For painful menstruation, typically involving abdominal cramps.

Insight:

  • Dosage: 2 caplets every 6 hrs, max 6 per day.
  • Ingredients: Acetaminophen 500 mg, caffeine 60 mg, pyrilamine maleate 15 mg; caplets.
  • Contraindication: Concomitant other acetaminophen-containing products.
  • Warning: Acetaminophen has an increased risk of hepatotoxicity if overdosage or ≥3 alcoholic drinks/day. Pyrilamine potentiates central nervous system (CNS) depression with alcohol and other CNS depressants. Caution with warfarin, sedatives, or tranquilizers.
  • Adverse events: Acetaminophen—hepatotoxicity (overdosage). Pyrilamine—drowsiness, dizziness, paradoxical excitation (especially in children). Caffeine—nervousness, irritability, sleeplessness, and occasional palpitations.
