Through education and promotion of flu vaccination, pharmacists can cut down on the millions of cases of illness, hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations, and thousands of flu-related deaths. Furthermore, patients report positive experiences at the pharmacy when they receive flu shots.

In one study, one-third of patients who received a flu shot in the 2013-2014 flu season received the immunization at a community pharmacy. Almost all of these patients said they had a positive experience, 99% said the community pharmacy was a convenient place to get a flu shot, and 98% of patients described the pharmacist as skillful in his or her flu shot administration.

In addition, almost all the patients surveyed said they would receive a flu shot at a pharmacy.

More than 145.6 million doses of flu vaccine have been distributed so far this year, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Thankfully, this year’s flu season has been relatively mild.

A recent Walgreens’ Flu Index showed that the vast majority of states are ranking low on the index, but areas in Texas, Arizona, Nevada, Florida, and California are showing some flu activity.
